Soundtrack Of Silence by Matt Hay

Not every  one can write humor. Matt Hay can write in a really funny way You have to laugh as he tells about the deafness he experiences everyday. Basically, his point is not to make us laugh but to remember the music of our time. His time is the Eighties. All of us have such a play list in our memories: the Seventies, the Sixties or the Fifties maybe. It is amazing. Songs played while riding in a car or just sitting around had more meaning than we thought.  While reading about Matt Hay's hearing worsening,  there is the desire to rehear the words of the songs from our past. Were the words filled with a message or just random words? If one of these is true, that means there is another place to explore our dreams, motivations and desires. Perhaps, in the end we will truly appreciate our hearing. Maybe a playlist of music can take us home again.

 Charlie is leaving Lancashire for New York. It is her first time visiting there. She is so excited. In her shoes, I would feel the same way. The trip on the plane goes well. Everything is great until she figures it out. Harry Taylor is not there to meet her.  It is such a horrible feeling to experience what is happening to her. She spends hours at the airport and find she does not have enough information with her. The story goes on. Although I have never had this experience, I almost feel her pain. It is a wonderful book. We definitely learn about Charlie.When all we want to know is where is Harry. Walking this woman back and forth as she tries to think what to tell her parents, etc. leaves the heart pumping faster and faster. You really feel like crying for her. This is not the way I pictured her New York Christmas. By the way, Lancashire is near London.

 My family must own some secrets too. It seems the normal thing. If they have any skeletons rattling in the closet,  they have been more than silent. Since it is a novel, I can read it with the joy of being uninvolved. I do not know what happens to the body as we make up lies to cover truths. It is all done because we want to protect someone from pain. As we protect them, they look around and see and feel that some thing is not right about their life. The one who is keeping the secrets searches for ways to cover his dishonesty: drinking, sex, running. It is all just balls scattered on the floor. No one can walk through them.
