The Sweetheart List by Jill Shalvis

Image
After going  through a pile of hurts, Harper starts her life all over again. This time she will just depend on herself. If she had to pick a theme for a speech. She would talk about independence. Jill  Shalvis in The Sweetheart List is humorous as well as wise. The characters reveal their lives which means their pains which come unexpectantly. All of sudden you are bounced into a new place, with new lessons. Ivy is in that same place. With Harper,Ham, Ivy and four brothers it is difficult to put the story down. In The Sweetheart List, there is a  new surprise every day along with better ways to love.

Walking On Fire by Kathryn Crawley

Image
Letting children become adults is more than difficult. To see them physically move away plays in the head like an old, sad movie. Kate in Walking on Fire by Kathryn Crawley flies to Greece. First, her heart is broken. She finds out from her husband the  marriage is not dying. It is dead. It is in the decomposing phase. It is hard to believe she is leaving Texas Some days you are not ready to live another twenty-four hours. The question is will the next day become easier. If not, what do you do? Major events, serious ones, have caused communities  to separate themselves and live in their shells. One wonders about their thoughts.   Ayelet Gundor-Goshen's writing causes an unsettled and sad feeling. Thank goodness, she did not cater to feelings that are only hungry for happy, happy. What a lie! Ayelet Gundor-Goshen  might want us to know that life brings distressing times along with better times. For this we must thank her.  Yes, she is writing about a shootout. One that includ

Some days you are not ready to live another twenty-four hours. The question is will the next day become easier. If not, what do you do? Major events, serious ones, have caused communities  to separate themselves and live in their shells. One wonders about their thoughts. These perceptions lead them out of those close quarters. Ayelet Gundor-Goshen writing causes an unsettled and sad feeling. Thank goodness, she did not cater to feelings that are only hungry for happy, happy. What a lie! Akyelet Gundor-Goshen  might want us to know that life brings distressing times along with better times. For this we must thank her.  Yes, she is writing about a shootout. One that includes a Black boy and his mother and a few Jewish people from a synagogue. This is a psychological novel. Feelings are important. The heart might not have the right answers. That does not mean to reject them.. Listen to the heart and save a friend or a relative. I think the parents in Boston discovered it is better to listen

Mr. Hammond And The Poetic Apprentice by Mallany Ambrose

Image
Two brothers in the same profession for a while. One is totally text bookish while the other one is dreamy. He loves poetry. It exerts the mind to believe two brothers can deliver and lose a breech birth. The mother  strains not to take the laudanum. She is dying.  Mrs.Foster will die.   Mellany Ambrose collects a reader simply because she looks at objectivity and subjectivity in a different way, a scintillating way. Objective: It's true.  Patients die. Subjective: Men, doctors, fault themselves for these deaths. It is not possible to exist as a decent person when a few think of you as a murderer. If you did not have a calling, you would run from a medical education as quickly as possible. Failure is as spooky as vultures in a high tree. This book,"Mr. Hammond and a Poetic Apprentice" forces us to look at the Medical world again. It is a hard nut to crack. Maybe compassion can not mix itself with s

Agnes's Broken Dreams by Judy King

Image
Like most people, Agnes, at sixty-four, is ready to recall the sweet and bitter memories of her past.  A trip back to  Australia can only help her recall those other  worlds. Her dreams also become  fodder for her thoughts. She especially wishes to remember her father. Reading this book is like reading a true memoir. Some times Australia seems like a mysterious continent. Much of what we know is just about the convicts living there. Also,we can connect to it by thinking of sheep and The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough. We might know a bit about sheep too. Plus, the Aboriginals come to mind. How dated is that information?  Agnes's Broken Dreams by Judy King is made up of Psychology. Agnes has heavy questions about her ancestry. It is so sad to have lived like Agnes with empty places in our hearts and minds.

Lucky Dogs by Helen Schulman

Image
Meredith is so down and out. It has been said, once you reach the bottom there is no place to go but up.  I am sorry. Waiting for her acension is like waiting to feel a hundred degrees in the winter while living at the North Pole waiting for Christmas. Patience is not easy to grow for most people. Maybe she should settle and think of  getting rich on a show like Jeopardy. Why worry about acting in one of those movies where the woman dies and her lover holds her hand as she whispers an Elizabeth Barrett Browning poem. Helen Schulman has the talent to make  one feel guilty for not caring about Meredith. At least, squeeze out one tear. The author should write Historical Romances. Then, she could make loads of money to share with poor Meredith.

The Midnight News by Jo Baker

Image
Jo Baker's "The Midnight New"  is an invitation to come see, follow along with the British who are smack dab in the middle of World War II. On the home front the neighborhoods are being destroyed. Hard to believe when you were just sitting down to look at a  delicious cookbook. The characters are well rounded. There is a feeling you have met them yesterday on the train or in a department store. Charlotte is the guide. She is a  very modest woman who is ever ready to lend a helping hand or just share a conversation. Truly, the writing is great. This is Social History at its best. These quiet war heroes and heroines do have stiff upper lips. The British really have skin that does not break easily.

Queen of Exiles by Vanessa Riley

Image
The king decides to give jewels to Marie - Louise's as a surprise. This time, this is the way he has chosen  to show his love for Marie-Louise. "Castles and palaces were the thing of fairy tales,  not the reality of budgets and potential dowries." It is easy to miss thinking about the daily lives of those who lived and reigned during the early 17th century. It was not a time when life was all about making money, making love and  drinking wine...Queen Marie - Louise is on the throne with King Henry. Her thoughts are practical. Her character leads her to have great concern for her sister and daughters. Ruling a kingdom, Hayti, takes over every day of your life.It is exhausting.Instead, we will enjoy a little gossip, laughter and a cup of tea.

What The Neighbors Saw by Melissa Adelman

Image
The description of mansion like  homes in an out of the way suburb takes too long. The description of beautful and large  homes nudge themselves iato place while one of the community men lies brutally murdered in the woods. His death seems lost in the shadows of the houses and the  lives of the neighbors. Recently, Alexis and Sam  became new neighbors. It is interesting psychologically why the couple does not scream and cry to get out of this high-class community where a man has been tortured..Alexis and Sam are brave. The novel "What  the Neighbors Saw" is very good. Meanwhile it would serve us well to willingly toggle our memories. There is where our identity is found. For an example, one night Alexis and Blair chat about their mothers. Even with a friend and a glass of wine these are tense and uncomfortable moments. Melissa Adelman the author opens the mind. To know about the whole self is better than wearing a mask for the sake of ourselves, family and friends. Oh, I need

The Bitter Past by Bruce Borgos

Image
Seeing  death by hate is an unforgettable experience. Piecing together the life of a victim  is tedious and may become long and still more puzzling. It's hard not to become very serious while reading about stillborn lambs and about women who have chosen to birth and grow our next generation. mothers More troublesome is the knowledge that the testing ground for bombs is in our backyards. One such place is out West. Bruce Borgos's books  should never sell for a dime a dozen. It is almost like you can feel the beating of the hearts of  those personally concerned. He writes with deep concern about our modern, today - world. It takes a  slowing down in the reading and then, a fast gallop because he writes words you do not want to miss or forget. When a book is written in this way, it becomes easy to empathize with the current situation. It makes you want to sneak a peek at the other books this man has written. If only we could steal away to a place without "A Bitter Past.&quo

Retribution by Robert McCaw

Image
When one sibling gets into trouble, the other sibling experiences the hurt too. Retribution by Robert McCaw happens in Hawaii. Ikaika's knife is found near a body. The blade has Ikaika's hand prints all over it.Of course, Ikaiki decides to help his brother prove his innocence. Retribution is great. With a complicated mystery, there is added present day sites in Hawaii.  You can almost smell the pineapples. Reading the mystery brings to mind how hard it is to make righteous judgments. There is the fact that sometimes we can become framed in a crime by someone else. Thank goodness, our Democracy uses Blind Lady Justice.

Lexington by Kim Wickens

Image
Reading "Lexington" by Kim Wickens is like really attending a horse race. The excitement is addictive. It is wondered whether the horses like Lexington can feel all the drama, and do  they like their notoriety. I suppose they at least know that racing day is their day to show off like on a birthday. For myself, I like the eccentric names given the horses. For example, Fashion, Boston, Lexington  and the other quirky names. It is also something about the horses that makes you care about their lives: have they been injured? How short or tall is the horse and how much are they they willing to give of  themselves in the races. Their bio can read like the beginnings of our children's first days out of the womb and forward. Of course, none of this is a joke. These horses like  Lexington become a part of American History.

The Second Ending by Michelle Hoffman

n  In Tatiana's country, Russia, there are changes. Life does not seem more free. There are long lines for food, etc. Her husband is moving to China for a  job. She will remain at home in Russia. This  is one more change. So, to keep her world spinning Tatiana becomes more neater.Where she lives is run like  an important official's office. In other words, she is more organized. Nothing must hang in the wrong place. Color coordination is important too. Her son, Alexei, follows in his mother's footsteps. He is very aware of the importance of orderliness. Probably, some of his angst goes into his piano playing. He is a professional pianist. He began piano lessons at six years old. It is interesting to read about how we try to control our worlds. We are truly survivors.

When I waked, I Cried To Dream Again by A. Van Jordan

Image
A. Van Jordan nudges the reader to explore the many ways Black youth can relate to Shakespearean writings..For example, there is Othello, Titus Andronicus,  Place this play next to a student  or your favorite cousin and feel the strength of meaning along with culture. While there is the  atrocity of police brutality and young people who continue to become early martyrs, there is hope  their stars will shine as sacrificial lights to brighten coming days. They can never be forgotten. Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, and the other murdered children were just beginning to sense their individuality.Ripeness for potential greatness, this book becomes a wonder wand.. One that taps into the beauty of passion.. "When I Waked,  i Cried to Dream Again" will bring tears of rejoicing and tears of hope. for a better future.

The New Mother by Nora Murphy

Image
Babies are always a happy event especially for the new parents. Parents might give the new baby a special and sweet nickname. This mother in "The New Mother" by Nora Murphy calls her infant "stranger." Maybe the new Millennials have a whole different way to look at the baby world. There is the feeling Nora Murphy is about to introduce new ideas about new babies and new mothers. This woman is treating the newborn as someone totally separate from herself. Whatever is happening, it is presented well by Nora Murphy.

A Covert in Cairo by Kelly Oliver

Image
This mystery is so much fun. There is the fact that caution is important. In A Covert in Cairo by Kelly Oliver our main sleuths are Fiona Figgs and Kitty Lane. They are in Egypt. All the talk is about the Suez Canal. You learn something everyday. Being a spy involves wearing disguises. My heels are clicking up and down happily. I like an Egyptian setting and a cute, gutsy name like Fiona Figgs makes a mystery more thrilling. I might as well sit down and enjoy a little tea.
